Punjabi Matrimony - Full of Fervor

Punjabi people are full of gaiety, having strong likeness for festivals and celebrations. Punjabi matrimony, just like its community is full of fun and frolic, filled with buoyant moments along with being ritualistic. Grandeur and fun are so much a part of Punjabi wedding celebrations. Indian wedding ceremonies are diverse, but Punjabi wedding stands out for being most musical, extravagant, vibrant and colourful.

Wedding celebrations begins in both sides of the family much before the actual day. Punjabi wedding is a grand affair and runs for a few days at a stretch. Relative and friends gather for the wedding and women sings and dance in festivity. The pre matrimony festivities begin with Roka which is a Punjabi engagement ceremony involving families of both sides and is a small celebration. Three days before the marriage is supposed to take place the prayer session Akhand Paath begins where the Guru Granth Sahib read out without stopping. Shagun takes place when the bride’s father applies a tikka on the groom’s forehead and gives him gifts and sweets. One of the pre marriage rituals on the girl’s side is Chunni Chadana and Mangni. The groom’s sister gifts red sari to the bride in this occasion. After she is dressed in the sari, he groom’s mother places a red chunari on her head. She is gifted many accessories and jewellery following this. Then the mehndi takes place where the mehndi brought from the groom’s side is smeared in intricate designs on her hands and feet. The bride’s maternal uncles and aunts make her wear a set of red and ivory bangle called Chuda. Silver and gold ornaments known as Kaliras are tied to them. During the Ghara Ghardoli ceremony, the bride is smeared with a paste of vermillion, milk and saffron on her body by other females of the family. The girl is then bathed in holy water from nearby temple.

The groom gets dressed up for his wedding with a shehra on his head, surma on eyes and starts his journey to the bride’s house in a horse. The bride’s family welcomes the groom’s in Milni and gives them gift and cash. Exchanging of garland takes place followed by Kanyadaan and the couple takes round of sacred fire in mangalpheras. The bride leaves her paternal home in Vidaai throwing back rice which her mother tries to held back in pallu. The groom’s mother welcomes them with aarti at the door steps. The couple visits the bride’s family next day in Phera Dalna.

Love is Blind: Do you Agree?

"Love is blind". And thus ends a movie. I sigh. I yawn. I retire to my room. And off I go to my sweet little dreams. About 5 years back, this was how I used to be.

I see the same damn movie again, after about half a decade. And my reactions haven't changed a bit. But do I really have the right to be like what I used to?

"Am growing fat!!!", she screams.
"Oh! You look the same" I smack back.
"Then why is everyone saying that I have gained weight?" she snobs.
"And how am I supposed to know that!", replies my irritated soul.
And a small conversation takes place for about an hour.
Jesus! My phone bills....
I turn off the lights, lay back on my bed, stare in the dark, and go back in time.

"You haven't called me even once in the last couple of hours! You are changing Akash, you are no longer the same boy who proposed me. You don't love me anymore", and the next thing I hear is a dead tone.
"I told you, you sick fuck, keep safe distance from girls, but...", my brain scolded my sweet little heart, which in return gave a dialogue it gives often-"All in good time".
And thus I hung on to the relationship. After all, am a scorpion, am a hard nut to crack. "These people hardly ever fall in true love, but when they do, they are the best in the business", said a horoscope site, I don't remember which one though.

"A whole week has passed by, yet you haven't taken me to a single movie! You are changing Akash, you are no longer the same boy who proposed me. You don't love me anymore", and the next thing I hear is a dead tone.
My heart popped out of my mouth. How the hell is a man supposed to express his love!!! Its almost month-end. Haven't yet received my tuition fees. Am finding it hard to make both ends meet. And here is my Cleopatra, demanding me to spend over 300 bucks over some stupid Bollywood masala flick. Jesus, help me...

"Its okay Akash, you have invested a pretty huge sum with your bank. Your savings account is almost nil. Just make your passbook look better, and we will go out for lunch."
My heart swells with pride. I could not have made a better choice. This is the right girl for me, this is my girl for me.

She has changed a lot in a couple of years. She knows me, she understands me, and she now sort of likes my weird ways. Guess she can finally feel my love.
A few days back, we were having a sort of lovers' quarrel, when she snapped back at me, "Oh! You know, am nearly perfect." I sighed away from her. In my heart, I knew she was lying. If she claims to be "nearly perfect", I don't know what the hell "perfect" means.

And my "perfect" lady can't be fat, can she?
